Pit bull that killed Norwich baby will be put down; police found no reason for deadly attack

The mother of a newborn who died when he was mauled by the family’s pit bull in Norwich last week has agreed to have the dog euthanized, police said.

She is expected to sign a “voluntary surrender” form, Lt. Anthony Gomes said, and the dog would be euthanized after a 10-day quarantine period ends.

Police were not able to determine what caused the dog to lash out violently on McKinley Avenue May 10. The male pit bull attacked 1-month-old Carter Settles while he was in his grandmother’s arms with his mother nearby. The grandmother was knocked to the floor but not injured, Gomes said.
