ELMONT, N.Y. — He grabbed the lead and then this gentle bay colt grabbed America's heart. In the late afternoon shadows of New York, with the thunder of 90,000 racing fans urging him on to history, American Pharoah did what no horse had done in a generation of humans.
He won the Triple Crown.
Pharoah's name may be misspelled, but his majestic performance will never be misconstrued. He is greatness. He proved it Saturday in a dominating, wire-to-wire 5 1/2-length victory in the 147th Belmont Stakes.
Pharoah runs with Secretariat and Citation and the other nine now.
