The burning car was parked in a lot at 46 Kane Street, police said. An officer noticed the car burning just before 4 a.m., but was not able to see if anyone was inside.
The officer alerted the police dispatcher of the fire, went up to the car and broke a window to try to see if it was occupied and to remove anyone inside, police said. But the car was fully engulfed and the officer was pushed back by the heat and flames.
Firefighters arrived and put the fire out, after which they and police saw that somebody had been sitting in the driver’s seat and was now dead, according to police.
