An arrest warrant made public this week details how a 71-year-old Hartford woman, in an attempt to find cover from retaliatory gunfire in her neighborhood, was struck and killed last October by a 16-year-old boy speeding a stolen SUV in reverse down Westland Street.
Kevin Amos Jr. was charged with first-degree manslaughter, second-degree larceny, evading responsibility, first-degree assault and conspiracy to commit first-degree assault.
The victim, Yvonne Smith, a grandmother known as a guardian of the block, was killed when she was hit by the stolen Kia Sorrento that, authorities said, was driven by Amos.
Details of the teen’s arrest were disclosed this week following a First Amendment challenge by The Courant and the Reporter’s Committee for Freedom of the Press of a 2019 state law that kept secret the court proceedings of juvenile matters transferred to adult court.
