A convenience store clerk who was shot in the back in New Haven Wednesday may have been the victim of a stray bullet, police said.

The shooting happened about 6:20 p.m. at the corner store at 453 Huntington St. in the Newhallville neighborhood, Duff said. Police received an alert from the ShotSpotter gunshot activation system and went to the address. The clerk was taken to the hospital and detectives were called in to investigate.

Police believe a gun was fired outside the store and the projectile went through the store window and struck the clerk. They said they don’t know who the intended target was.
