New Haven police operation shuts down illegal street races

Under cover of darkness, police fanned out to drag-racing hot spots in New Haven Saturday night and shut down illegal street races.

Police towed nine vehicles, arrested three people and handed out 34 summonses and tickets during the overnight operation to put the brakes on reckless driving. Five people were arrested on drug charges, they said.

The stepped-up enforcement effort began at sunset and went into the early-morning hours. It involved uniformed and plainclothes officers who went to areas where racing has been known to happen and watched. Once people appeared to be gearing up for a race, they stopped them.
