New Haven police open internal investigation after video of officer punching man at Walmart goes viral

New Haven police have launched an internal investigation after a video surfaced and was shared more than 600 times on Facebook that showed a police officer punching a man unconscious inside a local Walmart Tuesday.

Police released Officer Rafael Ramirez’s body footage on Thursday afternoon amid social media outrage, as well as a police report documenting the episode.

The video shows Ramirez arguing with the 37-year-old victim, Jose DeJesus, in Spanish about leaving the store prior to the confrontation. Police said DeJesus was asked by multiple store associates to leave the store, and when he didn’t, they stepped in.
