New Britain’s 10,000 students got a lesson this week in unpredictability during the pandemic: The long-awaited opening of school was abruptly delayed until after Labor Day.
Administrators announced Sunday evening that they were pushing off the first day of class, which had been planned for Sept. 3. It’s now set for Sept. 8.
Educators concluded they needed more time to distribute laptops and Chromebooks to each student, and to finish installing air filters, Plexiglas shields and other safety equipment in the schools.
The last-minute change was a precaution to ensure that everything is ready to go when classes begin, schools spokesman Matthew Cannata said.
