A fierce fire that killed a man, injured two firefighters and destroyed neighboring buildings in Waterbury this week was an accident, sparked by a burning motor scooter on a porch, the fire chief said Wednesday.

More than 30 people were displaced by the fire that started in a four-story apartment building at Colley and Robbins streets near Waterbury Hospital Monday morning. The flames spread to a two-family house next door at 37 Colley St. What remained of the buildings was deemed to be structurally unsound and razed, Chief Terrence J Ballou said.

He identified the man who died as Elias Koulis, 68.
