In a State of the City speech that mostly highlighted progress, New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart took aim at what she called “the elephant in the room” — the school system.
Stewart signaled that she’ll be providing little or no new money for education when she proposes a budget next month.
“What I will not do is blindly throw additional tax dollars into a massive bureaucracy that is failing our students,” she said Wednesday evening in her annual address to the common council.
Arguing that student performance in New Britain lags the rest of the state, Stewart said the education system needs to come up with a better way of operating.
