Man rescued from car that crashed into Killingly river

A man was rescued from a car in Killingly over the weekend after it went off the road and plummeted 25 feet into a river, state police said.

The crash happened about 11:20 a.m. Saturday when Mohammed Elkennawi, 86, of the Central Village section of Plainfield, was driving a 2004 Jaguar north on Main Street, they said.

Police said he rounded a corner and the car crossed over to the right shoulder, jumped a curb and went off the road. It then burst through a chain link fence and plummeted about 25 feet into the Five Mile River.
