A Torrington man was charged after police say he carjacked a couple in Hartford Sunday night, injuring the two in a struggle that ended when the car crashed into a pick-up truck.

Aaron Rugar, 26, faces charges including carjacking, third-degree larceny, second-degree assault and second-degree criminal trover, among others, Hartford police said.

Rugar approached the couple at a Shell gas station on Park Street about 10:15 p.m. and asked for a tire iron, according to police. As they were searching for a tire iron, authorities said, Rugar got into the driver’s seat.

The female victim grabbed onto Rugar while the male victim jumped into the passenger seat of the vehicle in an effort to stop its theft, police siad.
