While her family raises money for her funeral, the man accused of shooting Alessia Mesquita in broad daylight in New Haven Monday is due in court on a murder charge.
In addition to murder, Rashod Newton, 27, has been charged with criminal possession of a firearm and risk of injury to a minor, police said Tuesday. The second charge stems from the fact the little girl, who relatives say is his and Mesquita’s daughter, was at the scene of the deadly shooting.
The shooting happened shortly before 9:20 a.m. at Clifton and Lenox streets, Capt. Anthony Duff said.
