A Coventry man faces a criminal charge after he hurled a vulgar insult at a Black 9-year-old and used a racial slur against the child’s father, police said Wednesday.

Thomas Demers, 71, who lives in an apartment complex on Cross Street, was charged last week with second-degree breach of peace and released on a promise to appear in Superior Court in Rockville Aug. 11.

According to Chief Mark Palmer, the 9-year-old was riding a bike around the apartment complex on June 17 when Demers called the bicyclist a derogatory word referring to the male anatomy.

When the child’s father approached him to talk to him about the incident, Demers used the “n” word, Palmer said.
