The main building at UConn’s Hartford campus is closed Monday after an overnight equipment malfunction sent smoke throughout the building, the university said.
Smoke and soot is being removed from the building at 10 Prospect St., Stephanie Reitz, University of Connecticut spokeswoman, said early Monday. Online classes will be held as scheduled, and the nearby School of Social Work building is not affected.
The problem caused a belt in the building’s air-handling system to melt shortly after 2 a.m., filling the building with smoke and a burnt rubber smell, Reitz said. The malfunction triggered an alarm, which alerted the city fire department and university officials.
