The feud between Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton and “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver took a turn late Sunday when Oliver said on his program he would give $55,000 to local charities if the mayor made good on a promise to rename the city’s sewage treatment plan after him.
Spurred by Oliver’s humorous tirade earlier this month that attacked the city, from barbs on its legacy in hatmaking to its railway museum, Boughton shot a pithy video outside the sprawling sewage plant, saying it would be renamed after Oliver.
In a subsequent TV interview with NBC Connecticut, Boughton said the video was made in jest, but that seemed to have only deepened Oliver’s desire for the honor.
