Investigators believe Farmington River drowning was accidental, identify 19-year-old Waterbury victim

Investigators believe the drowning of a 19-year-old Waterbury man Sunday in the Farmington River was accidental, police said Wednesday afternoon.

Andrey Evangelista was swimming in the river with friends when he was last seen going under water at 1:40 p.m. Sunday behind Tunxis Meade Park in Farmington.

His friends called 911 and Farmington police and firefighters rushed to the scene to search for him, police said at the time. A state police dive team recovered the man’s body in about 20 feet of water about three hours later.

“While the investigation is ongoing, the incident appears to be an accident at this time,” Farmington police said in a statement Wednesday afternoon.
