A licensed hunter shot and killed a pet dog Thursday, saying he thought it was a coyote, police said Friday.
Vernon police were sent to a Bolton Road address at about 10:20 a.m. on a report of a dog that had been shot, police spokesman Lt. Bill Meier said. The owner had found the dog dead in a wooded area, Meier said.
The hunter is cooperating and no charges have been filed, he said. Police are investigating, along with the animal control unit and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Meier said.
Reached Friday afternoon, the dog’s owner would not comment.
