A Hartford police sergeant was charged with third-degree assault Monday after he punched and spit on a Black woman during the booking process in mid-March.
On March 15, a woman was brought into booking in connection to a domestic violence incident. She fought several officers during her processing, Chief Jason Thody said in a press conference at the end of March. The woman yelled racial remarks, hit and spit at officers, he added.
James S. Guzie, 47, who was working in the detention division, punched and spat on the woman, a news release said. The video footage of the incident has not yet been released.
