More than three years after former Hartford police Officer Jill Kidik was repeatedly stabbed in the neck and nearly killed, she recounted the frightening moments she believed she would not survive as she faced her accused attacker at trial Friday morning.
Kidik stared at 42-year-old Chevoughn Augustin from behind the pandemic-era plexiglass surrounding the witness stand in a Hartford courtroom and told the gallery, half-filled with her family and former police colleagues, that she could not understand why a seemingly routine call to a tenant-landlord dispute had exploded into violence.
“I don’t know why it’s happening,” Kidik recalled thinking as the fight with Augustin began.
