Hartford police are taking a new approach to solving nonfatal shootings, which increased more than 68% last year.
Starting Sunday, the department will have a separate team of detectives dedicated to investigating shootings that cause injuries, but not deaths. The shooting team, as it’s called, will be made up of four detectives and a sergeant, Lt. Aaron Boisvert said Friday. Police hope to add more members.
The team will focus exclusively on shootings, he said. Detectives won’t be pulled away from the cases to investigate other serious crimes like murders, robberies or shots-fired complaints, and they will have more time to follow up with victims.
