Governor Ned Lamont signed the CROWN ACT Thursday, becoming the eighth state to push the bill into law.
Short for “Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair,” the CROWN ACT bans hair discrimination based on someone’s hair texture or hairstyle if it’s “commonly associated with a particular race or national origin,” the bill reads.
The bill passed with a 33-0 vote in the state. California was first signed the CROWN ACT into law in 2019 after being proposed by Cali. Senator Holly Mitchell.
Since then, the CROWN ACT has passed in the House of Representatives and the states of New York, New Jersey, Colorado, Maryland, Virginia and Washington.
