Gov. Lamont faces growing pressure to close Connecticut businesses as coronavirus cases rise

As Connecticut lurches deeper into the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, a growing chorus of state legislators, municipal leaders and physicians is calling for immediate action to shut down high-risk businesses, including restaurants.

The governor has now heard from a group of impassioned health care workers, municipal leaders and multiple outspoken state legislators, all of whom want stricter measures to control COVID-19. Meanwhile, neighboring states have increasingly moved to action, shutting down certain businesses and imposing tighter restrictions than Lamont has imposed in Connecticut.

This week has also seen some of the most distressing COVID-19 numbers since the virus ravaged the state in the spring: deaths and positivity rates are at the highest levels since the spring.
