Four state parks closed to swimmers

As the first heat wave of the season stretched into its fifth day, the state announced Wednesday that four state parks are closed to swimmers, three because of bacteria levels in the water.

Swimming is not allowed at Gay City State Park in Hebron, Lake Waramaug State Park in Kent and Green Falls Pond at Pauchaug State Forest in Voluntown because of the presence of an indicator bacteria, the state’s environmental agency said Wednesday afternoon.

The swimming area at Mashamoquet Brook State Park in Pomfret is closed for maintenance, the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said.
