Forty percent of the town’s highway crew called out sick on Monday as a snowstorm blanketed the streets, the mayor said.

The town and union representing public works employees are due to start contract negotiations, Leclerc said. A union representative could not be reached immediately.

The town was making up for the reduced staff by redirecting employees from the transfer station and others who normally would be clearing sidewalks to street plowing, Leclerc said.

Police spokesman Lt. Josh Litwin said police have seen plow truck drivers out “working hard” since early in the morning and have not noticed anything out of the ordinary.
