UConn has owned women’s college basketball for a long time — that’s nothing new. However, the Huskies are also beginning to take over the WNBA record books as well.
After dishing a pass to Carolyn Swords on a fast break layup, Sue Bird became the WNBA’s all-time leader in assists with 2,600 on Friday night. She passed Ticha Penicheiro, who played 15 seasons, mostly with the Sacramento Monarchs.
Sue Bird joins her former backcourt mate Diana Taurasi atop the record books, as Taurasi broke the WNBA records for both 3-pointers made and points earlier this season.
