A Hartford man who was released from prison to a halfway house as he neared the end of a 25-year sentence for felony murder is back in jail after state police say he raped a Stafford woman and then got caught smuggling crack cocaine into jail.

Anthony R. Smith, 42, remains jailed in lieu of $750,000 bail on charges that include first-degree sexual assault, first-degree unlawful restraint, first-degree escape, possession of narcotics, and smuggling drugs into a jail.

Smith had been living in a halfway house in Hartford and was working at a warehouse in Windsor and regularly signing himself out to go to work, according to the warrant for his arrest.
