Newington Police and Eversource are urging residents to beware of a phone scam circulating and asking individuals to “furnish payment on their [Eversource] accounts via pre-paid credit cards,” police said Thursday.
“Eversource representatives never demand instant payment over the phone, require the use of pre-paid debit cards or request customers meet at a payment center to make the payment,” Newington Police Chief Stephen Clark said.
Police recommended a few other tips: never provide personal information over the phone, at your door or online; be aware that scammers can manipulate caller ID; and if the phone call is threatening disconnection, that customers would receive a written notice first.
