East Hartford police aide files federal suit against chief and town, contending discrimination

EAST HARTFORD — A former East Hartford police officer who was stripped of his gun and badge but has continued working as a department aide has filed a federal lawsuit against department leaders and the town, contending racial discrimination.

Filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court, the complaint by Juma Jones, who is Black, contends the department meted out harsh, humiliating and unfair punishment after Jones was accused of improperly accessing computer files.

The suit against Police Chief Scott Sansom, Deputy Chief Mack Hawkins and the town contends racial discrimination and retaliation under civil rights law and denial of due process and equal protection under the U.
