EAST HARTFORD — East Hartford police officers who were helping out at a fire scene Monday discovered an extensive hallucinogenic mushroom growing operation, police said Wednesday.

Officers went to 449 Burnside Ave. in the evening to assist firefighters at an active kitchen fire, police spokesman Lt. Josh Litwin said. Inside the home, police found enclosed “grow tents” with irrigation, humidity controls and lighting, as well as hundreds of psilocybin mushrooms in various stages of growth, Litwin said.

A 32-year-old resident was arrested and charged with possession of a hallucinogenic substance, possession with intent to sell a hallucinogenic substance, operating a drug factory and possession of over 1/2 ounce of marijuana, Litwin said.
