Connecticut state, hospital officials hope start of Biden’s presidency will bring more COVID-19 vaccine doses, stronger response to pandemic

Connecticut officials say they’re hopeful the inauguration of president-elect Joe Biden will mark the beginning of a new direction for the state’s — and the country’s — coronavirus response, particularly when it comes to vaccine distribution.

“The incoming administration has a strong enthusiasm for federal government leadership in the vaccine effort, and that’s really important,” said Dr. David Banach, an epidemiologist at UConn Health. “I’m enthusiastic about that, and I’m very enthusiastic about the dedication to science and to scientific leadership with the new administration.”

At a press briefing Tuesday, Gov. Ned Lamont, an early Biden supporter, emphasized the president-elect’s plan to invoke the Defense Production Act to compel companies to prioritize vaccine manufacturing.
