Bridgeport man illegally received over $100,000 from Social Security after father passed away

A Bridgeport man has admitted that he received around $111,000 in Social Security funds after his father passed away in 2006.

Adolfo Vargas, 43, pleaded guilty to theft of public funds before U.S. Magistrate Judge Donna F. Martinez Monday afternoon.

“Vargas’ father lawfully received Social Security Administration (SSA) monthly Retirement and Survivor Insurance benefit payments,” investigators said. “When Vargas’ father became ill, he gave Vargas access to his bank accounts so Vargas could make purchases on his behalf and take care of his affairs after his death. Vargas’ father died in 2006, but the SSA was never informed of his death.
