For the third time in four years, Avon voters at a referendum Wednesday tried to turn down a new budget, but it passed anyway.
The vote was 198 “for” and 327 “against,” but turnout was so low that the budget was automatically adopted anyway.
Avon’s charter requires that for a budget referendum to have authority, at least 9% of eligible voters must cast ballots. If turnout is below that, the council’s proposed budget automatically passes.
On Wednesday, only 525 people — or a little under 3.9% — voted. As usual, the polls were open from 6 a.
