AVON — Arguing that police aren’t entitled to require signatures from people viewing police records, an Avon man is appealing a recent court decision that went against him and the state’s Freedom of Information Commission.
Superior Court Judge John Cordani concluded last month that the public’s interest in safely maintaining original government records makes it reasonable for an agency to require a signature from anyone who wants to examine them.
The case may ultimately determine whether state and local agencies can demand a signature from someone asking to look at records, even though state Freedom of Information law doesn’t specifically grant them that power.
