WEST HARTFORD — Facing a surge in car thefts, car break-ins and tire thefts, West Hartford police are waging a social media campaign to get residents to step up security.

“It’s 9 p.m. Do you know where your key fob is?” asks a recent message on the department’s Facebook page. “Hide it, lock it or lose it,” says another.

Like towns across the state, West Hartford is experiencing an increase in crimes targeting cars. Thefts of vehicles were about twice as frequent this month as October 2019, and car break-ins are running at about three times the rate of last fall.
