Waterbury police have arrested a man they believe was driving under the influence when he caused a chain reaction crash that killed a 6-year-old girl.

The crash occurred at about 9:30 p.m Sunday in the area of 1037 Baldwin St., where police say a Chevrolet van driven by Luis Loja, 39, struck a parked Honda-CRV which then struck the child, a 29-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man

The woman is listed in stable condition at St Mary’s Hospital, police said. The man was not hospitalized. Police did not release any identities.

Loja, who left the scene but was convinced to return by witnesses that followed him, was charged with 2nd-degree manslaughter, 2nd-degree assault with a motor vehicle, evading responsibility in an accident resulting in death and other offenses, was held on $750,000 bail pending his arraignment, police said.
