The animal, a cross between a bison and domestic cattle, escaped from a nearby processing center about two weeks ago and had not been seen for a few days until it was spotted several days ago in woods off Route 72, police said.
On Wednesday, police officers encountered the bull again on the side of Route 72. As the officers approached, the animal lowered its head and scratched at the ground, demonstrating it would charge, police said. As the cops moved away, the beefalo retreated into the woods.
In an initial news release, police identified the animal as a steer, a neutered male, but on Friday they said it was a bull, weighing up to 1,300 pounds.
