A week after people began camping in the street outside the Bridgeport Police Department, elected city leaders have agreed to explore several of the protesters’ demands including cutting funding to law enforcement and removing police officers from schools.
In a resolution submitted by city council members this weekend for a later vote, leaders acknowledged the city has had its own incidents of police brutality and misconduct “which have cost the city money, and irreparably damaged the reputation of the Bridgeport Police Department.”
The resolution, shared by organizers of the weeklong occupation, calls for divestment from the police department, but does not specify a dollar amount.
