Norwich police arrested a man Wednesday in connection to a telephone scam that left an elderly woman out of over $30,000.
Dexter Enwerem, 34, was charged with first degree larceny. He was part of a Nigerian phone scam organization, investigators said.
Back in September, a woman made a complaint that her 80-year-old mother in law, sent around $31,500 in gift cards to an unknown individual and organization that was “helping the homeless,” police said. A thorough investigation allowed police to obtain an arrest warrant for Enwerem, they said.
