LOS ANGELES – A fashion aficionado, UCLA receiver Darren Andrews likes to use his mouth guard to express his unique style on the football field. Last year, he had one that made it look like he was bearing a mouthful of sharp teeth. This year’s edition has a much deeper meaning.
When the fourth-year junior bears his teeth this season, his mouth guard shows a simple message: “three star.” As in a three-star prospect, a good high school recruit who wouldn’t be great. It’s a small reminder of who people thought Andrews was, who he knows he is and who he wants to be.
