UCLA linebackers embrace competition for starting role

SAN BERNARDINO – Just as UCLA has at several positions on defense, the Bruins have the best possible problem at middle linebacker: too many potential starters, not enough starting spots.

Senior Isaako Savaiinaea and junior Kenny Young are likely the two leaders for the starting position at middle linebacker, but head coach Jim Mora and linebackers coach Scott White have also opened the competition to a third contender: freshman Lokeni Toailoa. Every day, the trio battles for the starting position. White said there’s no deadline to name a starter and the uncertainty doesn’t seem to be on the minds of any players.
