UCLA ace James Kaprielian is projected to be a high first-round pick in the MLB draft

UCLA pitcher James Kaprielian projects as a first-round pick when the MLB draft begins on Monday.

LOS ANGELES – Three years ago, James Kaprielian told major league baseball teams the same thing.

Thank you for the interest, but he planned to attend UCLA.

“Hey, we understand,” he remembers hearing back. “You’re going to play for Coach Savage. We know how he is.”

The Seattle Mariners selected Kaprielian in the 40th round. But they knew the Beckman High product was so dead-set on pitching in college that they didn’t even pick up a phone to deliver the news.
