If I had my way I would like to have none of these guys as my starting quarterback in college. Brehaut had the most hype coming out of high school, but that hasn't necessarily translated into him being the number 1 guy. Prince had a couple of huge games last year and a few games where UCLA fans thought he was playing for the other team. Hundley is probably the best athlete of the group, yet that could be more of an issue with Jim Mora's new system. No longer do I see UCLA running that strange pistol offense that we had seen under the last coach.
This competition probably will end up being a lot like last year. One guy wins the job but is on a really short leash and could be put down to third string after a bad game or even a bad practice. I expect Brehaut to be the guy with the opening game start. He has the best potential to be an NFL quarterback. He also has the best arm and mechanics of these 3 men. With Jim Mora and offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone implementing a type of spread offense they are going to need somebody who can throw the ball down the field. That is going to be Brehaut.
Does Brehaut really deserve to be number 1? I don't know yet. He has the opportunity to showcase himself in a style of offense that is better catered to his skill set and that should help him greatly. The pistol offense was not feeding his strengths on the field at all. The spread offense will allow him to use that arm strength he possesses.
Let's not forget about Brett Hundley though. He does have more speed and a pretty decent arm. He could be a project for Mora and Mazzone at this point. They are going to need somebody who is prepared a year or two from now. Hundley is still pretty raw for a college QB. He has a lot of talent and a lot of upside. Let's not forget that he has already been tabbed as some sort of savior for UCLA football. I have not seen that quite yet, but I am willing to give the guy a chance.
Kevin Prince should spend the majority of the season on the bench. Too much inconsistency in the past and though he has more starts in college than the other two, he is just not the right fit. I have never really been a fan of Prince even during the wins that he was quarterbacking during.
So where exactly does that leave us? I think it is battle between Brehaut and Hundley and that is exactly how it should be. Brehaut has more experience and Hundley probably has more potential. It is going to be interesting to see who actually wins this job. I started this article thinking that Brehaut should win the job outright. Now, I think that Hundley is the better choice. I am sure my opinion doesn't matter to Mora and Mazzone. I trust them to make the right choice and pull UCLA out of the cellar of a top heavy Pac-12 conference.
