UCF receiver Tre'Quan Smith, last season's American Athletic Conference rookie of the year, had to be convinced to play football.
Unlike many of his peers, the 20-year-old from Delray Beach didn't grow up fantasizing about an NFL career. He didn't even play organized football until his freshman year of high school at Village Academy. And after a breakout performance with two interceptions and four catches for 50 yards just four games into his freshman year, he quit football.
"He just quit. I don't know why," chuckled John Lewis, Smith's high school receivers and defensive backs coach.
