GREENVILLE, N.C. — East Carolina's marching band drew loud boos from the home crowd when several members took a knee during the playing of the national anthem before the Pirates faced off with UCF.
Neither of the football teams were on the field during the anthem.
Band members who took a knee were following in the footsteps of 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who was the first to either sit or take a knee during the anthem to bring greater attention to deadly police force used against black men.
