Troy University was founded on Feb. 26, 1887, and it was originally known as Troy State Normal School. In 1893, it became Troy State Normal College, according to Troy University.
The college got another new name in 1929 when it became Troy State Teacher's College. That was the name until 1957 when the Alabama State Board of Education slimmed its title to Troy State College.
The next name change came in 1967 as it became Troy State University.
The current name of Troy University was adopted in April 2004.
