TROY — Melvin Tyus’ biggest impression in his first college start may not have been on the field.
Tyus, in Troy’s season-opening 24-13 loss at Boise State last weekend, showed some spunk on the sideline, defensive coordinator Vic Koenning said.
When a freshman had erred but wasn’t listening to Tyus, Tyus — to use Koenning’s phrase — “showed good leadership,” to put it mildly.
“It was like, ‘Holy Smokes. An alpha male, finally,’” Koenning said Monday. “I saw some leadership, some stuff I’d never seen out of him. Holy Smokes, great.
