Of course, by halftime quarterback Gunnar Watson had hit Whittemore on time and in stride a lot more than Smith had. Watson had the good sense not to point that out to Smith, of course, but it was obvious enough that he didn’t have to. That’s why Smith brought it up himself.
Smith and Watson both showed in the second half their improvement since last season. Whittemore, who caught five passes for 94 yards and a touchdown on Saturday, said both quarterbacks have made considerable progress since the end of last season.
Smith took over as the starter when Kaleb Barker was lost for the rest of the season in the sixth game.
