MOBILE – Troy running back B.J. Smith keeps running where few Trojans have gone before.
Smith needed only the first quarter plus one play to top 100 yards rushing against South Alabama and the Trojans eventually took a 38-17 victory Tuesday night at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
Smith finished with a career-high 170 yards on 22 carries. It was Smith’s fourth consecutive game with 100 or more yards rushing. Only Arrid Gregory, who played from 1993-96, has four straight 100-yard rushing games in Trojan history.
But after a crazy first half with offensive fireworks on both sides, Troy’s defense pitched a shutout in the second half, protected a 31-17 halftime advantage and returned the coveted “Belt” to Troy.
