But Coastal Carolina, which got hot again and pushed its lead to 12 at halftime, started the second half with two 3-pointers from Trevion Brown, two free throws by Zac Cuthbertson and another 3-pointer by Brown to build a 23-point deficit that was too much to overcome.
Coastal earned an 88-75 road victory at Trojan Arena, led by Tyrell Gumbs-Frater, who added to the shooting clinic. Gumbs-Frater scored 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 6-of-8 from deep on Thursday night.
Troy played without leading scorer and rebounder Jordon Varnado, who was suspended for the game.
Without Varnado’s 17-point average, points weren’t easy to find for the Trojans (7-6, 0-1), which couldn’t match Coastal Carolina (7-6, 1-0) from the outside.
